Prep Team Practice

M-Th 6:15-8:15/45pm; F 6:15-8:45pm;Sat 10am-12:30pm

    W 6:30-8am will be offered Oct-Feb for make-up.

Hugh Convery and Brad Callahan will coach prep team this year.  Brad comes to us via Rivermist and Auburn Aquatics.  Hugh will be coaching the practices on Monday and Wednesday and both Brad and Hugh will coach all other days.  In addition Gary Taylor will work with Prep drylands on Tuesday Thursday and Saturday.  The first week, practices will end at 8:15, the second and third weeks 8:30.  After three weeks we will designate swimmers at Prep 1 or Prep 2.  Prep 1 will stay in until 8:45 and Prep 2 will get out at 8:15 (ish).  Starting in October we will offer an AM workouts on Wednesdays, and if possible we’ll move the Wednesday PM practice up an hour.

Each practice will start with 30-40 minutes of dryland exercise.  All swimmers should arrive with appropriate clothing for indoor or outdoor activity, especially good shoes.   These activities could include running, calisthenics, tumbling, agility drills, motor skill development, training circuits, or team sports.

Attendance

Prep swimmers are making the transition from age group swimmer to Senior swimmers.  One important step is accepting a higher emphasis on consistent practice attendance.  Newer prep swimmers should make 4-5 workouts weekly while returning prep swimmers and high school aged prep swimmers should make 5-6.

Prep swimmers need to maintain their training Sept-March and April-July.  Vacations and travel should be schedule around these times or if a swimmer has to be out of town they should make arrangements to practice by either going to the club in that town, or taking workouts with them.  If you will be out of town during one of the holiday school breaks start working early to set up a training regimen for your swimmer.  A long break in December can really set an older swimmer back and increases the chance of illness/injury when they return to training.

When a Prep swimmer is ill or injured (unless they need bed rest) for more than one day I would like them to come in.  I have various dryland routines for various illnesses (swim ear, sore knees, sore shoulders) that will allow the swimmer to still get a workout while recuperating/rehabbing.

Meets

You should all have a meet schedule.  All swimmers are expected to attend meets for which they are eligible.  To be entered you must send in a meet entry request.  As a courtesy, parents should send back any meet slip they receive, noting whether to enter or not enter the swimmer. These notes will be due by a published deadline about two weeks before each meet.

The year is divided into two seasons.  Short Course season is Sept – March.  Long Course is April –August.  Every swimmer should have a special “focus” meet at the end of each season.  Because SC season is so long we usually have a big meet in December as well.  Meets are as important to improvement as practice.  I have always felt that I do my best coaching at meets - after the event, when swimmers can get feed back on ways to improve next time.

Equipment

Prep team swimmers should have a practice suit, team suit, and team cap (if they wear a cap).   Try to use the team suit only for competition.  Competition suits should be comfortably tight, plain Lycra suits (13-14 swimmers competing at state champs or higher meets may consider a technical suit for those meets).  All swimmers should have a team suit before our first dual meet at ABSC.  Coaches will distribute caps at meets to swimmers who need them and then we will bill your escrow $4 for latex and $14 for silicone.  You may also want to purchase a team warm-up team parka or other team apparel.

For equipment, prep swimmers need pull buoys, paddles, snorkels and training fins.  You may also want to purchase your own kickboard and heart rate monitor.

Our supplier is Friends Unlimited.  They have an on-line catalog that you can get to from our web site.  They will have a team outfitting Tuesday Sept. 12.
