Education Column

(temporarily) dechlorinated: Slowing Our Rolls

A week into our kids’ school closures, not a single child had learned to play a stringed instrument. None had created an art piece worthy of display at the Louvre. Embarrassingly, exactly zero had picked up a new language — not even an easy one like Mandarin.

Instead, they sat on the couch, played Minecraft and ate for 14 hours each day.

I was ashamed.

Not because of my children’s actions, but because of mine.

GwinAq Covid-19 Training Plan Underway, Phase 2 Scheduled for June 1

Constructed by Alex M. - Blue Team Tomorrow marks the third full week of practices using safe spacing strategies and it appears to be effective. Provided there are no new outbreaks next week we will move to the next phase of scheduling.  Phase two protocols are described in the article below. Next week's schedule is now posted (see calendar at left) and the link will be emailed out to members each week. Sr/Sr3 and Blue team swimmers who are practicing will also do drylands 3x/wk.  Other groups will continue to do the drylands@home workouts.  Your coach will let you know the times.  Please note that by signing up you agree to continue to follow all CDC social distancing guidelines at all times. Families with members who are showing any Covid symptoms or whose members are not all practicing social distancing should not come to the pool at this time.

Some of our families want to hold off team workouts for now.  We fully support that decision.  In order to keep fit while remaining home we encourage you to join the drylands@home live and supplement that with 3x/wk cardio work of your own (run, bike, skate, climb, etc)  If you are a senior swimmer or from another group and missed the live practice you can view many of them on our Homepage and join in on our Facebook page.

"Swimming in College" Zoom Meeting Recap

We had a great Zoom meeting with parents yesterday Thursday May 14. It was a great chance for all rising Juniors and Seniors, as well as their parents as well as a number of rising Freshman and Sophomore who were getting an early understanding of this process. The presentation covered a range of topics about the wide variety of college swimming opportunities but also topics on college search and financing that are helpful to students who are not interested in swimming beyond high school.  The slides from the presentation are linked below.

Next Work Day May 30

Our next workday will be Saturday May 30.  Sign up for it will be via email, so please shoot me a note if you'd like to help. I will add you to that portion of next week's practice schedule.  We'll need 12 people 8-10a and 12 more 10a-12p. We'll be taking down the rest of the tent as well as possibly painting the new storage shed we'll need to make way for the new locker rooms!

Phase 2 Training Tentatively Scheduled for June 1

Right now we are targeting June 1 to begin phase 2 of our training plan.  In phase 2 groups will expand to 18 swimmers at a time.  There will be 2 swimmers 6 feet apart at one end of the lane and 1 at the other.  This will allow us to accommodate the growing number of returning swimmers while leaving pool time for our other programming (lessons, clinics). Sr, Sr3 and  a modified Prep1 will train in the AM.  Prep2/Jr and Blue/Gold will train in the afternoon.  If this schedule affects your ability to attend with your current group please let me know.  Likewise, if you currently are not participating and plan to start in the next two weeks please email me right away.

 Phase 2 Tentative Schedule

Banquet Tentatively Schedule for Saturday June 13

We have penciled in June 13 for the Banquet (now picnic).  The plan is to do it as a picnic at the pool with family tables (byot) spread 8 feet apart.  Look for a evite soon.  I will need volunteers to set up/decorate so let me know if you're interested.  We won't be able to show a slide show but we'll make one for on line so if you have some great pics that aren't just of your swimmer ;-) please send them to me (pls keep each email under 5mb)

Competition Schedule Forming, First Meet will be an Intersquad June 20

We now have the beginning of a competition schedule.  Meets will be held in small session (40 athletes) with a limited number of coaches and officials and no spectators.  Sessions could be live streamed. Swimmers would arrive and leave in their suits as there will be no changing areas open.  There are still a number of loose ends to tie up but here's what we've got so far:

  • June 20 - Intersquad @ Gwinnett Aquatics. Sr session @ 8am, 11-12 boys and all 13-14 11am, 11-12 girls and all 10Us 2pm.
  • July 10, 11 - Dual/Tri Meet with SPAC and possibly LIFE.  Older swimmers would swim in groups of 40 on Friday and younger on Saturday
  • July 24-26 - Fall Series League Summer Champs.  Older swimmer would have 2 days of competition, younger would have 1.  After this meet most of the team would take a break until Aug 10.
  • USAS Regionals - these meets are for Senior Sectional and higher swimmers and are being targeted for mid to late August so any athletes interested would have to maintain training through the start of school.

Mom Says "I Want to Swim Too"

We have had numerous requests from some of our families as well as the community at large to open up the pool for lap swimming.  So starting this Friday we will start some "1 per lane reservation only" lap swim hours.  Swimmers will have their temperatures checked and have to socially distance while at the pool.  You must arrive and leave in your suit.  No changing area will be provided.  The days are MWF and Sat at mid day and Sunday evenings.  You can sign up for 1 hour blocks (sign up directly on the google doc.  please be careful to only edit your square. if you make a mistake email me, don't try to edit the doc.)  We are paying a guard/coach to be there so there will be a cost of $25/mo.

Do Your Part to Stop Infection

We want to continue to stress the importance of preventing the spread of infection and share the following information being circulated by healthcare officials:

  • Stay at home (#safe@home) except for essential activities.  When you do go out, wear a mask.
  • Avoid getting closer than six feet to anyone;
  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water for 20 seconds or use hand sanitizer that has 60-95% alcohol. This is especially important after going to the bathroom, before eating, or after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing;
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth;
  • Cover your mouth with a tissue or your elbow if you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash, and then wash your hands;
  • Stay home if you or any member of your family is sick, and away from the pool and from fellow team members;
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces regularly;
  • Monitor the WHO and CDC websites for travel advisories and follow their recommendations.
